Wallowa-Whitman National Forest kicks off pile burning season

The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest has moved into pile burning season. This work will continue through Thanksgiving. We use prescribed fires to help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.

Smoke from pile burning is likely to be visible some days from Baker City, Sumpter, Haines, La Grande, Enterprise, and Joseph.

More information on specific locations and dates can be found at the Blue Mountain Interagency Dispatch Center

Residents and forest visitors may experience smoke during prescribed burns. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest works closely with the Oregon Department of Forestry in accordance with State’s Smoke Management Plans.
