The Umatilla National Forest (Forest) and City of Walla Walla are completing final preparations for the upcoming Tiger Creek Prescribed Fire Project, which is located along the southwest portion of the Mill Creek Watershed approximately 13 miles east of the City of Walla Walla. If conditions are favorable, the burn is tentatively planned for the week of October 19, 2020.
PREPARING FOR A PRESCRIBED BURN
A plan for each prescribed burn is developed through years of preparation to ensure burn operations meet prescriptive conditions that allow for successful burns and provide multiple benefits to resources. On the day of a planned burn, specific conditions of temperature, wind, fuel moisture, and smoke ventilation must be met to ensure the protection of all impacted resources.
Before implementing a prescribed burn, firefighters build containment lines around the perimeter of the planned burn area and around values at risk within or surrounding the planned burn area, and fall hazard trees near the containment lines.
The Forest also works closely with the Oregon Department of Forestry and Washington Department of Natural Resources in accordance with the State’s Smoke Management Plans to determine when, where, and how much is burned daily.
All these steps are crucial parts of successful burn operations that will benefit the landscape over the long-run by reducing excessive fuel buildup, improving forage habitat for big game and restoring the area to a more fire-adapted ecosystem.
